Important Safety Information
| Accidental Discharge
(AD): According to Jeff Cooper, there are two classes of
people regarding AD's; those that admit to them and those that
lie. AD's are rare but serious. Safe gun handling minimizes
the effects. We have provided safety berms on all our ranges to
catch possible AD's. If all shooting is between these berms as
required, the muzzle is always maintained in a safe direction
and proper care is utilized in handling firearms, the danger is
minimal. |
| Overshoot: Shots
which pass over a backstop are termed overshoots. Overshoots
mainly occur during rapid fire, either from lack of attention to
the sight picture, or from using the technique of "double tap"
(or triuple or more). A one inch muzzle rise (.223 class rifle)
corresponds to a two foot rise at 50 yards (4 feet at 100). If
the second shot is fired at the apex of recoil, the second shot
strikes 2 feet above the aim point. The rifle continues to
climb with additional rounds. 308 class rifles are about double
these figures. A clean overshoot at 35 degrees can travel 5
miles and will strike at 1000 feet per second. |
| Ricochet. A bullet
which strikes a surface at a shallow angle (less than 35° angle)
will usually not penetrate the surface, but rather skid along
for a distance and rise at the incoming angle or steeper, up to
about a 45° angle. A bullet striking 8 feet in front of a
backstop can rise 7 1/2 feet and clear the bank. A shot
striking ground closer to the shooter is more likely to miss the
backstop. A 308 class ricochet can travel up to 4 miles and can
impact at 1000 feet per second at this distance. For this
reason, shooting objects on the ground is prohibited.
Particular care must be exercised when zeroing at 300 yards.
Depending upon caliber and loading, bullet drop at 300 yards can
be 5 feet or more. Recommended procedure is to establish a 100
yard zero followed by 200 yards, then 300, preferably using data
from good ballistics charts. A 5 foot bullet drop from point of
aim at 300 yards will strike the range floor 30 yards from the
target. |
| For these reasons, rapid
fire (less than 3 seconds between shots) is not permitted on the
rifle range. Controlled fire only, watch your sight picture and
zero. |
